Background: D.K. Jones Limited, founded in 1983, has grown from representing major Western European manufacturers in the UK to becoming a regular supplier to a wide range of UK customers and a leading provider to many overseas fabricators, stockists, and trading companies. The company maintains stock levels of over 4,000 tonnes of prime quality fully certified material and, with support from many leading manufacturers, can supply a wide array of products either from stock or on short delivery times. They also offer a “same day” machining service for a wide range of semi-finished stock, ensuring quick delivery times for many “non-standard” items. The company sought to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs and thus participated in the SME Energy Efficiency Scheme (SMEES), a project to support small and medium-sized enterprises in implementing energy-saving measures. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) supported the project as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme.
Decerna undertook an energy efficiency audit of the SME’s building, which revealed the best option for cost and carbon reductions was to replace the existing lighting system with energy-efficient LED fixtures equipped with PIR controls. Decerna worked with the client to support the procurement process and provided a grant of £19,462.50 towards the total cost via the SMEES project.
Outcomes: The energy-efficient lighting upgrade resulted in the following outcomes for D.K. Jones Limited:
- Annual Cost Savings: Implementing LED lighting with PIR controls generated the company’s annual cost savings of £5,529.
- Carbon Emissions Reduction: The upgraded lighting system reduced approximately 23.5 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions annually.
- Payback Period: With the grant, the payback period for the lighting upgrade was reduced to 4.3 years, demonstrating the financial benefits of energy-efficient solutions.
Conclusion: Through their participation in the SME Energy Efficiency Scheme, D.K. Jones Limited successfully upgraded its lighting system with energy-efficient LED fixtures with PIR controls. The project resulted in significant cost savings, reduced carbon emissions, and improved lighting efficiency. D.K. Jones Limited showcases the positive impact of energy-efficient lighting solutions for small businesses in terms of financial savings and environmental sustainability.
Chris Jones, Managing Director, said:
We knew our energy consumption could be improved, but needed expertise to properly assess the situation and work out the best way forward. Decerna provided clear advice and robust technical analysis to show the benefits of a new lighting system. As a result, we’re expecting to reduce our electricity consumption by nearly 50% across the whole site, which is clearly a massive improvement.
