Background: Hagen Developments Limited specialises in leasing properties, particularly airports and offices. The company sought to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs and thus participated in the SME Energy Efficiency Scheme (SMEES), a program to support small and medium-sized enterprises in implementing energy-saving measures. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded the project as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme.
Decerna undertook an energy efficiency audit of the SME’s building, revealing that the best option for cost and carbon reductions was replacing existing lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting technology. Decerna worked with the client to support the procurement process and provided a grant of £4,663.80 towards the total cost via the SMEES program.
Outcomes: The LED lighting upgrade resulted in notable outcomes for Hagen Developments Limited:
- Annual Cost Savings: The implementation of LED lighting generated annual cost savings amounting to £2,263 for the company.
- Carbon Emissions Reduction: The switch to LED lighting reduced approximately 5.8 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions annually.
- Total Spend: The total expenditure for the LED lighting upgrade project was £10,364.00.
- Payback Period: With the grant, the payback period for the LED lighting upgrade was reduced to 2.5 years, demonstrating a swift return on investment for the company.
Conclusion: Through their participation in the SME Energy Efficiency Scheme, Hagen Developments Limited successfully upgraded their lighting system to LED technology. The implementation resulted in significant cost savings, reduced carbon emissions, and an improved lighting environment for their premises. The project showcased the effectiveness of energy-efficient solutions in driving sustainability and financial benefits for small businesses.
Stuart Keegan, Senior Surveyor at Hagen Developments, said:
