Background: Three Brothers Brewing Company Limited, a micro-sized brewery, recognised the significance of energy efficiency in their operations and aimed to reduce energy consumption and costs. To achieve this, they participated in the SME Energy Efficiency Scheme (SMEES) and implemented an energy-saving measure in their refrigeration system. The project received support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme. Three Brothers Brewing Company Limited underwent an energy efficiency assessment, which identified the following upgrade:
- Chillers: Three Brothers Brewing Company Limited upgraded their refrigeration system by installing energy-efficient chillers, optimising cooling processes and reducing energy consumption.
Decerna, in collaboration with the client, facilitated the procurement process and provided a grant of £16,077.60 towards the overall project costs.
Outcomes: The implementation of this energy-efficient upgrade resulted in the following outcomes for Three Brothers Brewing Company Limited:
- Annual Cost Savings: Installing the energy-efficient chillers generated an annual cost savings of £9,890.
- Carbon Emissions Reduction: The chillers’ upgrade led to a reduction of approximately 21.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions per year.
- Grant and Payback Period: A payback period of 1.2 years.
Conclusion: Three Brothers Brewing Company Limited successfully implemented an energy-efficient upgrade by participating in the SME Energy Efficiency Scheme. The installation of energy-efficient chillers not only led to significant cost savings but also contributed to reducing carbon emissions. Three Brothers Brewing Company Limited showcases how micro-sized businesses can prioritise financial benefits and environmental sustainability by adopting energy-efficient solutions.
